Barker Evans is a premier Family Law firm based in Sydney, Australia, specialising in all aspects of family law and de facto relationships.

The negotiation and resolution of complex family law settlements involving corporate and trust issues, third parties and international family law disputes are part of our expert practice.

We are also highly experienced in complex parenting matters involving risk issues, family violence, relocation and international child abduction.

We use Family Dispute Resolution, mediation, arbitration and if necessary, litigation.

Every family law matter is unique, which is why we take the time to listen to our clients, understand all aspects of their case thoroughly, and assist them in identifying the most appropriate pathway to resolution in the most empathetic way for your family.

Our lawyers and the team at Barker Evans are always focused on
supporting clients during what can be a difficult and emotionally
challenging time.

The first steps

The first step you take in any family law matter should always be to seek legal advice.

This may include seeking advice:

  • before you separate
  • after separation
  • about any arrangement you and your former partner may have already agreed to between yourselves.

When we are fully aware of your circumstances and intentions, we can:

  • identify the risks and benefits to you and what is in the best interests of children
  • advise you of the available options depending upon your circumstances
  • clearly outline the preferences as to how your matter should proceed

1. Conflict check

Before taking any case we make sure there is no potential conflict of interest with either of the parties.

2. Partner introduction

As a potential client, you will immediately speak to a lawyer. This is an introduction over the phone, usually with one of our principals, to get the basic details of your case and introduce our firm.

3. Initial consultation

You will meet with a principal and your solicitor for about an hour to discuss your case, focusing on parenting and property issues. We’ll provide initial advice, outline resolution options, highlight key issues, and recommend specialists if needed.

4. Strategy

Once we have all the relevant information, we construct a case strategy which best serves you and your family.

5. Execution & support

Some cases take time and this can be a frustrating experience. Our priority is to keep you informed throughout the process and provide all the support you may need to be able to move on with your life.

6. Resolution

Most cases resolve by way of negotiation or arbitration, adopting the many alternatives to dispute resolution. In some cases of entrenched conflict or intractable dispute, a Court hearing may be required.
